Today in History: On May 8, 1945, Allied forces accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany, officially ending the war in Europe. Millions celebrated around the world, with the biggest celebrations in Times Square and Trafalgar Square. Prime Minister WInston Churchill waved to the crowd in London. President Harry S Truman celebrated his 61st birthday as the country still mourned the death of FDR. Despite the end of the war in Europe, rationing and other hardships still remained intact. It would be another three months before the war would end in the Pacific.
